What is IVR (Interactive Voice Response)?

A phone menu that routes callers by key presses: 'Press 1 for sales…'.

Definition

IVR plays recorded prompts and routes callers based on the keys they press (or a few spoken words). It's reliable for simple routing but frustrating for anything else — callers must fit their question into your menu.

Why it matters

Every menu level loses callers. Many customers hang up rather than listen to a long menu.

How RANA AI uses it

An AI voice agent replaces the menu with 'How can I help?' in the caller's language — and actually solves the request.
