Abandoned Cart Recovery Call Script for Indian D2C
20 October 2026
Most shoppers who add something to their cart never pay for it. The Baymard Institute's long-running average puts online cart abandonment at roughly 70%, and Indian D2C brands see the same pattern, with a few local causes on top: surprise shipping charges, a UPI payment that timed out, no cash-on-delivery option for that pin code, or a size question nobody answered.
Emails and WhatsApp nudges recover some of these carts. A short, polite phone call recovers a different group: shoppers who had a real question or a payment problem and would have bought if someone had simply asked. This guide gives you a ready-to-use abandoned cart recovery call script for India (English, Hindi and Telugu openers), the timing and rules that matter, and how to run these calls without hiring a big team.
Why a call works when the reminder email didn't
An automated email can only repeat the offer. A call can find out why the shopper stopped and fix that one thing. In Indian e-commerce the reasons usually fall into a small set:
- Payment failed: UPI request expired, OTP didn't arrive, card declined.
- Delivery cost or time: shipping fee shown only at checkout, or delivery date too far.
- COD not available: the shopper wanted to pay cash on delivery.
- Product doubt: size, fit, material, colour or warranty question.
- Just browsing: comparing prices, waiting for salary day or a sale.
The first four are fixable on a 60–90 second call. The fifth is not, and your script should let those shoppers go quickly and politely.
When to call: timing that works
Speed matters more than anything else. A shopper who abandoned 20 minutes ago still remembers the product; one who abandoned three days ago has probably bought elsewhere.
| Step | When | Channel | Goal |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 15–60 minutes after abandonment | WhatsApp or email reminder | Gentle nudge with the cart link |
| 2 | 2–6 hours after (same day, daytime) | Phone call | Find the blocker and fix it |
| 3 | Next day | Message with the fix agreed on the call | Checkout link, COD option or size advice |
| 4 | After 3 days | Stop | Don't chase; add to your next campaign list only if they opted in |
Call only carts above a value threshold that makes the call worth it (for example, above your average order value), and only shoppers who gave a phone number at checkout. One call per abandoned cart is enough.
The abandoned cart recovery call script
Keep the whole call under two minutes. Replace the words in brackets with your own details.
1. Opening (first 10 seconds)
English: "Hello, am I speaking with [Name]? This is [Agent] from [Brand]. You left a [product] in your cart a little while ago, so I just wanted to check if you faced any trouble at checkout. Do you have a minute?"
Hindi: "Namaste, kya main [Name] ji se baat kar raha/rahi hoon? Main [Brand] se [Agent] bol raha/rahi hoon. Aapne kuch der pehle cart mein [product] add kiya tha. Checkout mein koi dikkat aayi kya?"
Telugu: "Namaskaram, [Name] garu na? Nenu [Brand] nundi [Agent] matladutunnanu. Meeru konchem sepu kritam cart lo [product] add chesaru. Checkout lo emaina problem vachinda?"
If they say it's a bad time: "No problem, sorry to disturb. I'll send the cart link on WhatsApp so you can finish whenever you like." Then end the call.
2. Find the blocker (one open question)
"Was it the payment, the delivery charges, or did you have a question about the product?"
Listen and pick the matching branch below. Don't read out all the branches.
3. Fix it: branch by reason
- Payment failed: "Sorry about that. It sometimes happens when the UPI request expires. I'll send a fresh payment link right now; it stays open for [time]. Would you like to pay by UPI or card?"
- Shipping cost: "I understand. Orders above ₹[amount] ship free, and you're ₹[gap] away. Would you like me to suggest something small to add, or shall I send the link as it is?" Only offer discounts your brand actually runs.
- Wanted COD: "Let me check your pin code… Yes, COD is available for [pin]. I'll send a link with cash on delivery selected." If COD isn't available there, say so honestly and offer prepaid with your real return policy.
- Size or product doubt: answer from your size chart and product details. "That style runs slightly small, so most customers take one size up. Exchanges are free within [X] days."
- Just browsing: "No problem at all. I'll leave the link on WhatsApp in case you decide later. Thank you for your time!"
4. Close and confirm
"Great, I've sent the link to this number on WhatsApp. Once you complete the payment you'll get an order confirmation. Anything else I can help with?"
Log the outcome for every call: link sent, ordered on call, not interested, call back later, or wrong number. These tags tell you which checkout problem costs you the most sales, which is often more valuable than the recovered orders themselves.
Rules to follow in India
- Consent and DND: a cart-recovery call is a sales follow-up, so treat it as commercial communication. Call only people who shared their number with you, respect the National Customer Preference Register, and stop immediately if someone asks not to be called. Our guide on how to check DND status before calling explains scrubbing.
- Registered numbers: business calling at scale should go through properly registered telemarketing numbers. See TRAI DLT rules for AI calling for the current 140/160-series rules.
- Data protection: under India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, use the shopper's number only for the purpose they gave it for, and tell them who is calling.
- Daytime only, once: one call per cart, during reasonable daytime hours. Repeated calls cause complaints and damage your brand more than a lost cart.
- No pressure tactics: no fake "only 1 left" claims or invented deadlines.
Checklist before you start calling
- Your store sends abandoned-checkout events (most platforms can, through a webhook, an app or an export).
- You've set a minimum cart value worth a call.
- Your free-shipping threshold, COD pin codes, return policy and current offers are written down for the caller.
- WhatsApp or SMS link sending is ready, so the caller can share the cart link during the call.
- Outcomes are logged in a sheet or your CRM.
- Calls happen within a few hours of abandonment, not the next week.
Running these calls with an AI voice agent
The problem with phone recovery is volume. A busy store can have hundreds of abandoned carts a day, mostly in the evening, and a human team can't call all of them within a few hours. That's where an AI voice agent fits well: the call is short, the reasons are predictable, and the answers come from your own policy.
With RANA AI for e-commerce and retail, an AI employee can receive your abandoned-checkout list (via webhook, Zapier or Make, or a daily upload), call each shopper in their language, including Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and other Indian languages, ask what stopped them, answer from your shipping, COD and return rules, and record the outcome. Upset or complex cases are handed over to your team. The same agent can also run COD order confirmation calls after the order is placed, which cuts RTO on the orders you've just recovered.
On cost: RANA AI plans start at ₹13,999 a month for 1,000 connected minutes, with calls billed in 30-second pulses. A typical cart-recovery call lasts one to two minutes, so even a modest recovered order usually pays for many calls. Check the current numbers on the pricing page.

Frequently asked questions
Is it legal to call customers who abandoned their cart in India?
Yes, if they gave you their number and you follow TRAI's commercial communication rules: respect DND/NCPR preferences, use registered numbers, call during reasonable hours and stop when asked. Treat the call as a sales follow-up, not a transactional call.
How soon should I call after a cart is abandoned?
The same day, ideally within 2 to 6 hours, after an automated WhatsApp or email reminder. Calls made days later recover far fewer carts.
Should I offer a discount on the recovery call?
Only if your brand already runs that offer. Most carts are recovered by fixing the real blocker (a failed payment, COD availability or a size question), not by discounting.
Can an AI voice agent make abandoned cart calls in Hindi or Telugu?
Yes. RANA AI calls shoppers in 11 Indian languages, including Hindi, Telugu, Tamil and Kannada, answers from your shipping, COD and return rules, and hands complex cases to your team.
